Alison Pendlebury – Lakeside Nursing Home Unit 301 – Principles of communication in adult social care settings. Outcome 1 – Understand why effective communication is important in adult social care settings. 1.1 Communication is the best way to develop and build relationships either in a personal and professional way, with it you can build respect, trust and friendship it also helps to express feelings, opinions and ideas. In a social care setting communication ensures that all decisions made are in the best interest of everyone involved. Service users are able to communicate the way they wish to be cared for and express how they are feeling, by communicating staff are able to do their jobs properly as everyone is aware of what is expected of them and the care is provided to the highest possible standards. 1.2 Effective communication will give a positive atmosphere in the work place, this will cause the staff to be more positive and willing to help each other, staff members will all be aware of the jobs that need doing and will be happy to work as a team, by doing this the service users will feel safer and feel that they can approach a staff member with ease to help them with any problem. Effective communication is essential in building meaningful relationships and this can build trust and respect therefore creating a much happier and relaxed environment for all concerned. Outcome 2 – Understand how to meet the communication needs, wishes and preferences of an individual. 2.1 To be able to meet a service users needs I need to ask a lot of various questions so that I can understand what they are asking for and how they are feeling, I also need to take note of their body language as this can tell me a lot about how a person is feeling even without them telling me as when someone is sad or worried you can see it in the face, they may not make eye contact, with
