Disabilities in a child can cause a development delay. Their disability may affect one area of development delay which in turn can affect another area, meaning that overall development cannot occur. This can lead to low self-esteem and self worth. Genetic inheritance is what triggers a disability, such as Down’s syndrome. This means that they may have an impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth so they will need extra support in daily activities.
Family background can effect a child's development by the family's values the culture and the way the child is encouraged and cared for all can effect the child development. The child environment can effect the development of the child e.g. Housing condition , opportunities for play and educational. Poverty and deprivation can affect the child's development because Lack of money can lead to poor nutrition and lack of opportunity and also lower expectations. Children and young people in the care system are more vulnerable,often due to the lack of stability and attachment disorder this can affect their emotional ,social and academic development.
Meeting children’s needs can affect practitioners as they will need to plan according to the children’s age, stage and needs. If there is a child in the setting who is visually impaired then the practitioner should make enlarged copies of worksheets so the child can see it much easier. This could affect the practitioner as if there are not any resources, e.g. large pieces of paper available, than this could limit the practitioner and also the child as it will become a barrier for their education and development. Another barrier could be lack of staff.
Disabilities may affect confidence and challenge social skills. Emotional If a child or young person is not emotionally secure it could impact on their development. A child or young person who is not shown any love, attention or support or even abused at home would suffer from low self esteem and have little or no confidence or value of themselves, causing them to have difficulties in socialising and participate in learning activities. Physical Physical influences include genetic conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis and Downs syndrome, which may affect a child or young persons development, which could be from problems caused by their condition such as growth and strength, meaning a child or young person may take longer to meet particular stages of development. Environmental The environment in which a child or young person lives may affect their development.
They can quickly fall behind from peers of the same age. They may find it difficult to interact and make friends with others who are more advanced. They may struggle with intellectual development memory and concentration. Delayed speech development A child who has limited or no speech could be a cause great concern. This would affect a child’s social and communication development as he/she would find it difficult to listen and speak to peers staff and carers this could also affect their behaviour possibly becoming frustrated and quite angry Whatever concern you have about a Childs development in any area, you should always share it with others.
If a child has difficulty meeting a milestone, it can mean some delay in other areas too. These developments can vary in each child. Developments in social and emotional, physical, intellectual and language begin from birth and continue into adolescents and it’s within these areas that a sequence is formed. An example of this could be that a baby will learn to hold their head up before learning to sit unaided. Or a child will learn to walk before they can run.
There may be many reasons why a child/young person’s development may not follow a typical pattern of normally expected development. Some of these reasons could be social, environmental, physical disabilities, resources available, cultures, facilities and equipment which are all interconnected. Some children may ‘play up’ in response to the stress of the life change. They may regress and develop less mature behaviour such as being unable to dress themselves or use the toilet. School age children tend to adjust to a new baby easier than younger children do. However, they may worry about where they will fit in when the new baby arrives. There are many reasons why a child’s development not follow the expected pattern including; Disability this may affect a child’s emotional developments for many reasons. A child with a disability whether it is a physical disability or a learning disability may struggle to manage their thoughts and feelings, they may not be able to express those thoughts and feelings and as a result become increasingly frustrated. The child may be unable to form relationships with others in their peer group and may feel isolated and withdrawn. If a child with a disability has emotional developmental delay they may form friendships with children who are much younger than they are which could affect how their same age peers see them.
