12th July 2012 Unit 3: Introduction to Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care or childrens and Young Peoples Settings. 1. Understand the Importance of Equality and Inclusion. 1.1 Diversity is to recognise value and take account of people's different backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experiences. Equality means treating everyone the same, although true equality is treating everyone differently in order to treat everyone the same. Inclusion means to embrace everybody irrespective of race, gender, culture, age, religion, ability etc. and to give them equal opportunities. Discrimination is treating differently any member or group because of their inclusion in a certain group whether that is a different religion, race, gender, ability etc. 1.2 Discrimination may deliberately or inadvertently occur in the workplace by people not understanding or listening to another’s opinion before making a decision. I feel the ability to stand back from any situation and try to see it from another’s perspective would help in reducing this issue. 1.3 Practices that support equality and inclusion reduce the likelihood of discrimination by making sure that every person is treated both as an individual for their preferences and choices and as part of a group with regard to their social needs and wants. Giving everyone the opportunity to have a voice in regard to their own welfare and particular needs will avoid people feeling that they are excluded in decisions. 2. Be able to work in an inclusive way. 2.1. Legislation and codes of practice relating to equality, diversity and discrimination which apply to my role as activity coordinator are Equality Act 2010, Discrimination Act 2005 and The Race relations Act 1976 with amendments 2.3.
