Nursing Program Entry Essay

After graduating from high school I was certain I wanted to study biology and then pursue medical school. My plan changed however when I realized in my junior year that biology didn’t require a lot of the practical and social elements I aspired. I began my research on what professions allowed more of a close-knit relationship with patients and what fields of study incorporated this earlier on in my academics. I spoke to my advisor and she told me about the accelerated nursing program, at first I thought another bachelors degree, that’s absurd; but I kept it in the back of my mind. Besides the teaching aspect, pursuing my master in anesthesia is also in my plans. I had no idea that nurses could further their knowledge, and choose to concentrate on one aspect. Seeing this specialty as an option brought back memories. I remember visiting Nigeria and taking a tour of a medical facility in Lagos some year’s back and all that stuck to me was a young gentlemen yelling out in pain, because his tooth was being removed. I compared that to the day four of my wisdom teeth were removed and just remembered I felt nothing but tugging in my jaw. Something as simple as not getting enough dosage of anesthesia or not receiving one before a surgical procedure could be the difference between pain and none at all. Without the anesthetist I easily could have been that young gentleman suffering from unbearable pain. Comparing those two instances allowed me to appreciate an anesthetist and those that work together to prepare the anesthesia tremendously. It’s a blessing to be able to pick a field that plays a role in helping others. I indefinitely want to be apart of a team that has positive goals; making sure that patients are attended to in an appropriate manner, and that their problems are solved efficiently. I have no doubt in my mind that I am ready and determined to not only take on such a role, but to also someday pass on what I’ve learned with future
