Introduction
Planning an end of life communication training innovation
I work within the District Nurse team in the out of hours services. I am a senior staff nurse in this team working 30 hours per week . We provide the local area with out of hour’s community nursing cover between the hours of 5pm and 8am.
End of life communication is a challenge to most nurses; it has been shown that many nurses lack confidence and training in dealing with end of life discussions and care issues. It is a nursing necessity that all nurses have the training and skills needed to care for this group of patients and their families.(Department of Health, 2008) States “Such skills are a national priority; the end-of-life care strategy recommended that communication skills training should be aimed at all staff levels.”
The area of practice I will be concentrating on is District Nursing, although healthcare practitioners of all levels within the community setting and hospitals are challenged with this difficult aspect of patient care on a daily basis. To carry this out in a skilful, respectful and compassionate nature relies on that person’s ability to discuss such a taboo subject “death”. Nursing staff very often feel anxious, nervous and lack confidence about such a difficult subject. It is also suggested by (Lisa Marie Chiplaskey,2004) Delivering excellent end of life care for the dying patient is something all patients deserve to have.
This essay looks at an innovation design that will assist practitioners and enable them to address these issues. As this project is a vision, it is exploratory in nature. Following discussions with colleagues, reviewing
