Political Action Awareness in the Nursing Profession

The Nursing profession has a variety of professional nursing organizations to choose from to become aware of the active politics influencing the profession. Nursing profession organizations can be local on the state level to international and specialized. Members support a mission statement and work as advocates of the nursing profession. The professional organizations consist of a large group of members at the state and national level receiving information of political decisions and events affecting the nursing profession. This paper will discuss a professional nursing organization in the nursing industry addressing a particular current political issue through the organization. In addition the discussion will review how nurse leaders can use professional organizations to maintain the awareness of political actions in the nursing and health care industry and why this is important for the nursing profession.

The Professional Organization for Political Action Awareness

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is a leading professional nursing organization representing over 3.1 million registered nurse’s nationwide (American Nurses Association (ANA) 2011 Annual Report, 2012). The mission of the ANA is to advance the nursing profession and improve the health of everyone. In 2011 the goals for the ANA were to focus on areas committed to excellence and continue to engage members to be strong advocates for patients and the profession. The integrity of the organization and the large membership is at the strength of political action.
