The more they practice and the more teachers and parents instill this in their minds, the better they will become. Perfect practice, makes perfect. Most people would probably have trouble with trying to remember how they learned to read. I would have to say that I am a person who loves to read and I think that is it really an amazing thing. Also, I am someone who is involved in education and research and I think that it is amazing how learning to read is said to be a talent that it potentially impossible.
Reading Umberto Eco’s “Role of the Reader” in college, Ricky states that, “The reader completes the text, that the text is never finished until it meets this voracious and engaged reader.” Although there are critics who believe there is a right and a wrong way to ready books, Moody says, “I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of literary meaning in all cases.” Part 2. Response I really enjoyed reading this article about how the author really has a passion and understanding for reading. This is probably the most in depth piece of writing I have read about the philosophy of reading. Ricky Moody uses very educated language and supports his claims with quotes from well-known people, one being Nietzsche. He ends his essay with a strong quote that uses personification, “I believe in the freedom to see literature, history, truth unfolding ahead of me like a book whose spine has just now been cracked.” With this quote said, it is very apparent that the author has a passion for reading.
Our culture is changing; every day more people utilize cybernetic ways to communicate which reduces the quality of our interaction. On her essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation”, Deborah Tannen points out that intimacy is the base of relationships, but how can intimacy exist if our communication levels these days do not even involve having a face to face conversation. Since the Internet and computers became more affordable, more people are becoming part of the cybernetic world. According to Wikipedia, there are over 500 million users on the most popular social networking websites, more than half of them are under 25. This means that most of the young members of our society are growing accustomed to a different kind of communication, perhaps one of less quality.

Around 250,000 copies of The Catcher in the Rye are still sold each year with total sales of more than 65 million books. My name is Daniel Porter and today I’d like to present my opinion as to why classic literature should be retained in the curriculum of senior English students. Classic novels provide the reader with opportunities to explore moral dilemmas within society and reflect on our own personal experiences. They raise an awareness of controversial issues sometimes not up for discussion, such as mental illness. Classic novels are well written and provide readers with exposure to language not heard in our everyday lives.

Professional athletes are getting paid more and more as time goes by, before it was $4.7 million now it’s more than $85 million and growing. While people in the U.S. don’t have enough food to eat and the police officers and fire fighters that put their lives at risk everyday don’t even get a quarter of that. Let’s take school teachers for an example they get $38,000 per year, well at least in the U.S. While the minimum starting salary for a basketball player, football player, hockey player and baseball player starts at around $109,000. What if the long drawn out nights of studying and touching up last minute term papers is causing you to only sleep for only a maximum of 4 hours? Students who don’t maintain an adequate amount of sleep are three times more likely to show signs of depression than their well-rested peers. Insufficient sleep has become an epidemic among college students.
The reasons some students do not have a book for class for a lack of funds, transportation, and motivation. First, some students are not completely prepared for class because they do not have the funds to purchase the required textbook. The most common reason for students having a lack of funds to purchase books is the fact that textbooks are so expensive. For example, at the Alabama State bookstore, a new Biology 127/128 lecture book will cost students $150.00. When students can purchase the exact same book on the Internet or in the collegiate bookstore for $80.00 to $95.00 that is a shame.
