Vika Gallegos English 100 New Year’s Eve tradition We have a tradition to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Ukraine. It is a family holiday. People usually celebrate it with their family and the family’s relatives. The preparation is the first part of the tradition. Five days before the December 31, there are a lot of people in the stores. They buy different kinds of food for their festive table. In Ukrainian tradition of celebrating New Year’s Eve, we have to have a variety of different foods on the table. The preparation also includes the decoration of the house. We start decorating a house in Ukraine on December 25. A Christmas tree is named “yolka” in Ukraine. Like in America, yolka can be either real or artificial. I like a real one, because the smell of pine makes the holiday even more joyful. Decorating a yolka is one of my favorite parts of the preparation. In Ukraine, you can decorate a yolka not only with colorful ornaments and garlands like American people do. Some people like to decorate their yolkas with different types of candies. I always decorate yolkas with multicolored ornaments and silver garlands. I think it looks very beautiful. Sparkling Christmas lights in a shape of snowflakes add coziness to the room. The next part of the tradition is cooking. In Ukraine, we spend all morning and afternoon to cook the dishes for New Year’s Eve celebration. We start the food preparation with the traditional salads, like “shuba”, “olivye” ,and egg and cheese salad. “Shuba” and “olivye” are salads with a variety of boiled vegetables, like potato, and carrots. “Shuba”has multiple layers, containing potato and carrots. Also it has layers of minced onion and smoked fish. The very top layer on “shuba” is a graded boiled beet decorated
