New Music Ensemble Concert Critique

On November 3rd I attended the New Music Ensemble concert at the Gerald R. Daniel Recital Hall. The concert featured pianist, Mark Uranker and the Iron Works. When I arrived there were not many people in the audience. The first piece, La Sola II was performed by a small ensemble. At first they all began tuning their instruments which I confused with the beginning of the piece, until I realized how bad it sounded. When the song did begin it was very loud and immediately startled me. In the background I could hear the xylophone ringing. The music sounded very strange. It was disjunct with very small intervals. The big differences in the music’s range made it resemble a conversation between two people with very different voices. I was not expecting the ending to come, especially because it was very abrupt with no warning. I felt as though I was caught off guard the whole time, and so I was not a big fan of this piece. The second piece called Volume was only performed by two men, the previous conductor and another performer on the Steel pan drums. The man on the Steel pan drums used wine bottles as well to perform the piece which reflected the history of the music. Slaves were the inspiration of this piece…show more content…
Mark Uranker played on the piano beginning with a soft conjunct melody that contained random spurts of scattered notes. As the music progressed it became more disjunct. I noticed another man sitting beside him who turned pages for him; I found it interesting that he at times would turn the pages at the wrong time causing the pianist to sternly shake his head. It seemed to coincide with the already strange piece. The piece reminded me of a weird dream with its almost eerie melody that was constantly disjunct and changing. As the piece approached its conclusion, we were all surprised with a sudden furious pounding on the piano made from a complex jumble of notes and
