I believe that when they first got married there was some kind of love in their relationship, but when they realized they could not conceive a child Don Elias blamed his wife. Even though it was most likely he was the infertile one, he treated her as if all she was good for was to take care of him like a maid. This is what made her a hard, bitter old woman. Dona Matilida believes it was her fault, and feels guilty about not being able to provide him with a child he so greatly desired. This caused her to turn a blind eye to what he was doing around town with other women.

The diction of soul implies that the love she has for her husband is genuine. Browning builds further on the spiritual realm of her love which gives the reader an impression that the love for her husband is so huge that it rises above the world: “when feeling out of sight for the ends of being and Ideal Grace” Shakespeare however, goes on to further on his exploration of love indicating that love is and “ever fixed mark” perhaps meaning that love is forever. Beauvoir outlines the idea of love being two factors, authentic and unauthentic love, between the two genders. According to Beauvoir women treasure and experience love as total devotion, claiming herself as a gift to the man she loves. Men rather view love as being in control, beings that are capable of handling their lives and gaining supremacy without assistance (2010). Women therefore are seen as depending on men and must gain power, independence, transcending with the aid of man (2010).
