Nettles – by Vernon Scannell Nettles, is a poem that offers different interpretations. The poem is set the poet’s own garden where the nettles are hidden behind the shed. The three year old child (the poet’s son) falls into the nettle bed which causes him to cry as it hurts him. As the father sees his boy coming to him “seeking comfort” with “sobs and tears”, he soothes his son, and when “At last he offered us a watery grin” the father takes his “hook” and “slashed in fury” until all the nettles where chopped off. His fury doesn’t stop there, he gathers the dead nettles and burns them, so they don exist anymore. But after two weeks the “bed” is filled with new born nettles and the fears and knows “my son would often feel sharp wounds again”. This poem is extremely effective as it means a lot more than just a boy falling into nettles. The message that the poet has stated in this pen is that parents can’t always protect there children no how hard they try. Also it is very emotional, about the fathers feeling for his son, which makes the poem very intense and more effective. The fascinating part is the use of metaphors and personification in this poem, which effectively helps the poet to get his message across. As I have mentioned before Nettles is a poem that can be interpreted in several ways. Scanning through the poem you will that there are several references to conflict, war and military, such as “spears”, “regiment” and “recruits” as well as many other references of wounds and violence. “That regiment of spire behind the shed: it was no place for rest” the word spite underlines how malicious nettles are, they have strong desire to hurt in this case the young boy. Saying “regiment” links to battle and that these nettles want to cause harm and pain, they are linked to war, the poet sees them as soldiers and described using the metaphor “spears” with in the
