Nolan Jackson September 23, 2010 Society and Social Behavior Roderick Graham Nerdcore Hip Hop Nerdcore Hip Hop is the newest genre of music that nobody knows about. Created in the late 1990's by Nerdcore Legend Damian Hess a.k.a MC Frontalot, Nerdcore Hip Hop lyrics are a combination of the common hip hop style mixed with "nerdish" type themes. Most of the rappers that perform Nerdcore are self pro-claimed nerds. I am now going to describe some of the elements of the Nerdcore culture which is symbols, language, values/beliefs, and norms. Since majorities of the Nerdcore artist are "nerds" at heart, most of them are very well educated. So to they speak in a very educated manner. In regards to what Nerdcore artist rap about, it can be about anything from politics to science fiction. On the other hand there are some hot topic that you will generally hear in most Nerdcore music like Stars Wars, Science, Fantasy, Space, and Computers. That’s what they talk about on a daily basis. It’s what they love. Some rappers have rapped out of a thesaurus. When I think of all the values and beliefs that the Nerdcore community possesses, the first and most obvious thing that comes to mind is that that value nerdiness. They are proud to be nerds and they are not afraid to show the world that nerds can rap too. They value what most people in society will call "geeky" like video games, web memes, and technical prowess. Only artist who consider themselves "Nerdcore" should have the label of Nerdcore attached to their music. Also, a part of their beliefs are what they call DIY ethic, which means "Do it yourself ethic." Basically that refers to the ethic of being self- reliant by completing tasks by oneself as opposed to having others who are more experienced or able to complete them for you.
