The workers were not visiting the clients on a weekly basis as mandated by DCFS and paperwork was consistently late. There was chronic absenteeism, a high level of turnover, low morale, and low job satisfaction among the employees. All of the above issues adversely affect the level of care and services being provided to the client. How can Hull House Association communicate change in an effort to increase employee satisfaction and organizational productivity? Hull House’s leadership was not supportive of staff at that time.
CASE 6: COUNTRYSIDE ENVIORNMENTAL SERVICES The case “Countryside Environmental Services” focuses on the affect an employee’s unpleasant behavior has on the team and organization on the whole. Gwen not being satisfied with her supervisor John, salary structure, family etc. subjects to incivility the very first day of her meeting with a new entrant, Vincent. Despite of such behaviors the company owner and manager John was not successful in managing her. Though John had sympathy for the family pressures she was facing, but her unpleasant behavior was affecting the efficiency of the entire team and the organization.
Her carer often comes round and is nasty to her, pushes her and calls her names. Mary hasn’t told anyone because she thinks it is her fault, she is being annoying and this is why her carer is horrible to her. Also people who are dependent on others for personal care. Sometimes people living alone and depending on a carer can make a person very isolated and they may find that their main contact with the outside world is through their carer. Their carer may be the person they see the most in the day.
The new team of managers did not recognise Jillian's special talents and seeing her as a new recruit and a recent graduate they treated her differently and regularly complained about her work results. Jillian became quite depressed but she continued on in her work and tried to accept this change in her life. When the economy took a downturn and despite all her past efforts and achievements, the company chose her for retrenchment. Jillian was devastated. For the first time in her life she found herself without a plan and she found it difficult to accept that even though she was hard working and a high achiever and despite having put a lot of effort and energy in her work, that she would be discarded easily by her new managers.
Nikki scored her self-assessment very low and is extremely dissatisfied with her job. Nikki’s behavior has a direct negative effect on her overall job performance, and this is costing the company in work performance. An additional assessment is not needed because Nikki is disengaged and cannot be counted on to perform her job responsibilities. It is here by recommended that Nikki be placed on an individual development plan and possibly performance managed out. She too, like me and others, seem to be failed by our medical system currently in place. Sue complains that her HMO is awful and they have withheld care on more than one occasion. She goes on to explain that an HMO insurance only allows you to see certain doctors. The doctors she needs to see, she goes on to say, are not available to her as they do not participate with her insurance, Aetna.
This feature can make it difficult for support staff to engage well with individuals, impacting on the level of support received. An example of this is one tenant who is autistic who finds it difficult to speak with people face to face. The tenant prefers to be alone at all times. This makes it very hard to support them as they often will not open their door, instead they will shout through the door that they are ok and do not need any help. This tenant does not get much support due to this which impacts on practice, staff are not able to complete tasks with her, and not able to physically monitor her well being.
The Day They Set Out Response Brandon Moreira In the short story “The Day They Set Out” by Beverly Harris, the protagonist, Jean is stuck in a life in which she does the same predictable routine. This makes her feel empty inside, and that she needs to try something new. The causes for her emptiness and difficulties are that, because of her lack of social skills, she has almost no friends. Her husband, Ross does not love her anymore, so he looks at other women to satisfy himself. Also, her lack of intelligence has left her with no job and an inability to get a job.
Gender discrimination leads to psychological and emotional disturbance, resulting in demoralization and descend in performance standards. It brings down the overall performance, and fuels more discrimination, which in turn increases the number of gaps in ones work further. After Ms. Salazar had been let go from her work, she had difficulty getting back into the workforce and putting effort into the tasks she was doing. She had later lost her home and had to move into a much more affordable accommodation due to her not finding a stable job. Ms. Salazar was not able to reach the full potential of the American dream due to the gender discrimination she had experienced in her workforce and the negative aftermath it had done to her psychologically.
