The thought of making it compulsory for girls to serve NS has always evoked a great deal of controversy as to whether it is necessary. The issue has surfaced as a result of many boys who feel that it is completely unfair that they have to spend two years of their precious lives serving NS while girls seem to have the advantage of completing their studies and step into society earlier, thus allowing them to have more advantages in terms of career. As far as I am concerned, I Do Not think that National Service should extend to girls. First and foremost, the main reason for implementing National Service is to prepare Singaporean men to take up the responsibility of defending their homeland from threats of invasion. In Singapore the NS (Amendment) Act was passed on 14 March 1967, under which all able-bodied male citizens of 18 – 21 years of age were required to serve 24 months of compulsory NS. Why was the idea of serving the country in the form National Service limited to boys? The answers are obvious.Unlike boys, girls do not possess the physics to train to ready themselves to fight in wars no matter how much girls argue on sexes equality. On the surface, this statement may even make girls seem weak but the truth is, defense of a country cannot be complete without the support of girls. It is not difficult to imagine how boys can fight successfully without girls looking after their children and families.Furthermore, girls have a different role to play. Generally, they have better inborn quality of a good homemaker which enable them to play a more important role of being supportive when the men are called on to defend the country. On the social side, when men serve NS, it creates a void in the economy which must be filled in order for the economy to continue functioning. If
