Since the late 1960s this stretch of land has been sought for the completion of the Pan-American Highway. However, as this paper intends to demonstrate, the completion of the highway would be disastrous for the wildlife and plant life that presently calls the park home. Diversity in a Small Space: The introduction to this paper touches briefly upon the massive amount of avian life found in Los Katios; in this section we shall discuss some other forms of life in the park, and how they interact with the ecology of the park. Some notable forms of life are as follows: * Rufous-cheeked Hummingbird – According to Birdlife International (2011) this is species is classified as Red List with a Threatened status; because these animals occur in so few places, and their current populations have not been quantified. * Violet-capped Hummingbird – According to Birdlife International (2011) this species is classified as Least Concern; these birds are fairly common, with mature individuals in the 10,000 plus range based on their territory.
Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream. The Laki eruption wasn’t really a single event, but rather 8 months’ worth of lava flows and explosions that ejected an astounding 14.7 km cubed of ballistic lava that came out of 140 vents. The eruption was caused by small earthquakes that were hardly detected by the seismometers the eruption caused a gigantic amount of smog and poisonous gasses to envelope Iceland in a matter of days which caused at least 10,000-15,000 deaths in Iceland alone. Consequences in Iceland Affects of a volcanic eruption An estimated 20–25% of the population died in the famine and fluoride poisoning after the fissure eruptions ceased. Around 80% of sheep, 50% of cattle and 50% of horses died because of
9, 000 of those being foreigners. The Tsunami’s energy was so great the wave traveled around the world three times. Seven years later in 2011 an earthquake 60km off the east coast of Tohoku with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale struck Japan. The earthquake triggered a huge Tsunami which reached heights of 133 ft. and killed around 15, 839 people, injured 5950 and left 3642 unaccounted for. Causes When a dense oceanic plate collides with a less dense continental plate the denser oceanic plate subducts under the less dense continental plate.
Even so, the test was continued even as the serious problems arose. Meltdown occurred at 1:23 AM, starting a fire that dispersed large quantities of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. The amount of radioactive material released was 400 times more than the amount the atomic bombing of Hiroshima released. Effects Environmental Effect The nucleur power plant is located next to the Pripyat River, which flows into the Dnieper reservoir which is one of the largest surface water systems in Europe. At the same time, supplies water to Kiev's 2.4 million residents.
Why was the Haitian earthquake so deadly? On January 12th 2010 at 16:53 local time (21:53 GMT) an earthquake hit the Caribbean island of Haiti. It was a colossal 7.0 on the Richter scale and lasted around 35 seconds, but inflicted a cataclysm which would take years to correct. It struck south of the capital Port-au-Prince destroying the presidential palace, UN HQ, as well as houses, schools and public buildings. The epicentre was a town named Leogane; about 19km (12 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, thousands were left homeless and up to 80-90% of buildings in Leogane were destroyed.
Ernest Thompson was born on August 14, 1860 in South Shields, England. He became a noted author, wildlife artist, founder of the Woodcraft Indians, and one of the founding pioneers of the Boy Scouts of America. He is one of the main people to be responsible for the strong influence of the American Indian culture in the Boy Scouts of America. Ernest later rejected his father and changed his name to Ernest Thompson Seton because he believed Seton had been an important name in his paternal line. He developed a fascination with wolves while working as a naturalist for Manitoba.
Comparative Essay about ducks Another year, another duck season. A few weeks ago, the 2012 Victorian Duck Season began which means that Victorians can shoot ducks in specific areas between the 17th of March and 11th of June. The opening of this season re-sparked a debate between the hunters and the greenies about whether duck shooting in Victoria should be banned or not. In Bill Patterson’s Letter to the Editor, he contends that Duck Shooting should not be banned and protesters are mixing up animal rights with conservation. In Patterson’s opening paragraph, he uses statistics to show the reader that there is a pretty large number of duck hunters in Victoria.
The government didn’t do much to protect the Native Americans, nor were they able to enforce their own laws regarding Native American land and treaties. The Removal Act of 1830 was passed by President Andrew Jackson on April 23, 1980 (Wallace, 4-5). Andrew Jackson conveyed that removal of the Indians to the west was for their own best interest and that removal was to be voluntary (Wallace 65). The Removal Act provided for the Indians large areas of land west of the Mississippi River and each tribe would have its own territory. Those that chose to stay could keep their homes and their gardens, but would have to obey state laws and adapt to white culture and customs (Wallace 65).
As a result of legal actions against Chevron Corp. for polluting the Amazon with over 18 billion gallons of toxic oil waste, Chevron Corp. has been ordered to pay $8 billion to clean up its oil contamination and restore human rights for the 30,000 affected people, by an Ecuadorian Court (Planetsave, 2011). 1.4 Scope This report specifically relates to the dumping of millions of toxic oil waste in the soil of Ecuador by Chevron Corporation making residents ill and damaging forests and rivers. Madison Michaud Block E Nuclear Disaster Essay In July 2010, a resettlement project was started in some of the areas surrounding the Chernobyl Power Complex that were evacuated, almost 24 years after the incident. The residents that lived in the areas of Belarus that surrounded the Chernobyl plant were resettled due to dangerous levels of radioactivity released by the accident (Chernobyl Accident 1986, world-nuclear.org). Chernobyl was a major example of a nuclear disaster. Fukushima and the Three Mile Island accidents are also examples of nuclear energy gone wrong, but the accident that had the largest negative effect on the land and population around the place of the accident was the Chernobyl Accident of 1986. The Chernobyl Accident took place at the Chernobyl Power Complex in what is now known as the Ukraine, on April 26, 1986.
