Alissa Ringeisen First-Year Writing Fairbanks 8 October 2012 Lives on the Boundary: Mike Rose In Lives on the Boundary, Mike Rose is observing a teacher, Dr. Gunner, in the English A course at UCLA. Many other professors and students call this course the “Bonehead” course because it is the lowest English course offered at UCLA. This course was designed for the slow, or remedial learners, the ones that were considered “marginal”. Dr. Gunner, however, saw potential for these students. She challenged her students to show their intelligence.
Blinder’s essay was thought out and written properly on one point I think was off. Blinder referred to the “No Child Left Behind” as an institution set up to help student get ahead, when that very program nulls the thinking of students. Alan Blinder will need college students to work “on developing a creative workforce that will keep America incubating”(Blinder 12) but within the No Child Left Behind Act students are forced to learn at the same pace as the slowest student in the room, which does nothing for the new innovator of tomorrow who will become bored with school after having to slow there pace of learning. If Alan would have used this act as a part of his reform in the educational system it would have supported his claims of the system that we already have is hurting of future and not insuring that our younger generations will be able to compete in this
Like a normal human being the student started to panic. So at the end of class he politely asked for extra credit, and the teacher in return said, no. Although in college you don’t receive extra credit he deserves some extra credit to make up for the mistakes the teacher had made. Another reason why teachers should acquire failing students with extra credit is that perhaps the students may of missed many days of school prior to being sick or injured. However, if your a student that misses a day of school, you should get the make up work and you should catch up to the rest of the class on your own.
My ninth grade was pretty cool until the last week of school I let my mouth get the best of me and said some things that I really should’ve not said and because I did I earned the next semester at the alternative school. When school started back I was very sad because I had to go to the “bad” school with all the “bad” kids and I was very nervous. Once I got there it was pretty cool and I really enjoyed it because the classes were smaller and you got more one on one help. My grades went up and my mom decided that I should spend the rest of the year there, which really messed me up because they did not offer any elective classes only the basics . My eleventh grade year was also a disaster because of the struggle of passing my biology state test and I was really distracted and just wanted to go back to the alternative school but my mom and the principle would not send me back.
A lot of people always think Brennan High School is for bad kids, kids that get kicked out of school that might be true for a few but most of us were there for emotional problems. Threw all my years of high school senior year was the only year I wasn’t in a psych ward. The last memory I really have of high school was getting punched in the face by a male student. He was starting with my two favorite teachers calling them very derogatory
The rest of the morning passed in about the same fashion. My Trigonometry teacher, Mr. Varner, who I would have hated anyway just because of the subject he taught, was the only one who made me stand in front of the class and introduce myself. I stammered, blushed, and tripped over my own boots on the way to my seat. After two classes, I started to recognize several of the faces in each class. There was always someone braver than the others who would introduce themselves and ask me questions about how I was liking Forks.
He lost the ability of hearing in the war. My first impression of him thought that he is only one the disable students on campus. I can feel he is so shy, fear and low self-esteem around the class because I saw him, he is setting at the corner with his deaf interpreter. I thought his low self-esteem is only coming from his disabilities, but I never anticipated that he is one of the return solider. Then, in the first day of the chemistry laboratory, we need to choose the group to do all the experiment together for the whole semester.
Instead of learning some actual useful information, teachers fret over the test rather than about how much that student is actually absorbing into their head. It has become a practice to ‘teach the test’ in today’s teaching world. Tests like SAT, ACT and AP have you pay quite a bit and don’t even show you what you did wrong, blocking out the possibility of even trying to learn from your mistakes. It is believed to be a clever tactic used to gain more profit, students keep coming back to prove they are worth more with those silly numbers. They stress day and night over these overrated tests, like previously stated channeling out the imagination, curiosity and good will.
In my essay I will examine three things I need to do to change my attitude on my education these things are; go to totoring, study, and stop procrastinating. I am doing exceptionally well in all my classes except for one Ms. Boykin’s Algebra II class. It is my fault because I don’t wake up early enough to go to tutoring in the mornings. My strategy for the 2nd semester is to study and to stay on top of make up work when I am absent and go to tutoring to get help on things I don’t understand. Since high school I’ve been doing poorly in math but, I’m not going to let it get the best of me and I will do what ever is necessary in order to pass and graduate in June.
Eventually I was moved from classes due to my insubordination and i was content at the time. In seventh grade I was still identified as a "Gifted and Talented" student but was in regular ed classes. My rebellion that year was much worse than the year before. It was mainly caused by the people I would hangout with and of course myself for letting myself be influenced by them. I started skipping class, leaving the campus and just generally not caring about my education.
