Logan Lorentz Brooke Anderson Writing 70a October 10th 2014 Assignment Eleven I’m from Hog Creek Oklahoma, which I believe is the most mystical place in the world. With only a population of 50 people, it is home to the Kiowa Apache. My brother said that the land in Hog Creek is sacred, and it has special healing powers. A warm day in July, in my old decrepit, little white nearly empty house near the creek I get up from my cot eagerly anticipating the excitement working out in the country brings me, and eager to discover something supernatural a little. Clothed, I started running up my driveway to the road. My driveway was a rugged dirt road that stretched across two acres of un-manicured grass and thick, full trees, which was my front yard. Back beyond the pastures, the lone bull, and my neighbors eight dogs I went. I was home. My day was concluded with my neighbor, Mia (who is an old native woman), telling me Kiowa stories. How I loved to hear her stories. She tells me how the Kiowa’s found cedar. She, in summary, said “a long time ago almost the entire tribe was killed but this infant that sustained life from nursing on his dead mother. While nursing on his dead mother he was found by a pack of wolves that took him in as their own and raised the child. And during his childhood raised by wolves he found cedar. It was the Kiowa that found cedar.” Like the boy, last of his people, from us, this land has things hidden. The enigma, which is Hog Creek, will always be my home. The benefit I feel from the connection with this sacred land, that is my utopia, exhilarates me beyond measure. It’s the secretive trees, the watchful cows, that humbling river under that most humbling bridge, and Mia’s magical stories of Kiowa legend that make up my home; the home in my
