Literacy Narrative Johanna Eldredge Southern Technical College Jennifer Polk The biggest obstacle that I have encountered in my ability why to read and write are my Learning disabilities. I was diagnosed at the age of 7 with Dyslexia and it has caused me much frustration. I has no idea why other kids could read out loud so well and I couldn’t. I had no idea why it took me so long to read a few pages of a book when other kids were almost done with the chapter. I had no idea why I couldn’t even sit down to write a paper when other kids were doing their essays in the span of a couple hours. I remember an instance in my English Literature class junior year, where we were assigned to read “The Catcher in the Rye” for 45 minutes…show more content…
I went in, and had todo cognitive testing: an IQ test, a reading test, and a slew of other things that I was just lost in. I felt an unbearable sensation of anxiousness growing with every new task we started. All I could think of was testing and wanting to get out. I questioned why I was even going through all of this effort. Every time I walked out for a break, the tension was eased, and I reminded myself why I was there. I kept thinking in my head “you are here to get better, and to understand yourself, and no longer have moments like English ever again.” When it was over, I was so relieved. I felt like the razor edges that I has been sitting on was removed. I could breathe again. Once all my anxiety had finally subsided, I was excited to know my results and understand the way I worked. After two months of waiting I was called to get my final evaluation. The evaluator handed me twenty-five pieces of paper and we went through them word by word and over every test result; I was bored and chomping at the bit to the findings. Finally whe we get to the last page of the packed and I read the conclusion that they came up with at the bottom of the page: “Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and a Reading
