Tomoko Shikoh Professor Jeff Jung English 1A 6 March 2013 My horrible home stays experience My first and last experience of home stay was almost 10 years ago. It was my first time over sea study abroad as an international student in New Zealand. I was excited to see a new place, and a host family I haven’t seen yet. I had a mixed feeling of nervousness, and expectation toward to the host family house. Also, I anticipated the time with my host family would be a great experience since I’ve heard that a host family sometimes treats you as you are a part of their family. I thought of a scene that we enjoy the different language and culture each other. However, my real experience of home stay led to disappoint my expectation. Some host family does not welcome you to their house in order to experience different cultures, but for increase income purpose. That type of the host family has a tendency to create some complicated environment for a student. I’ve learned from experience that my host family was one of those types. My bad experience was due to convention of senseless rules, a large family, and poor quality foods. To begin with, poor organized host family makes rules illogical which cause problems. On the very first day of my arrival at my host family house, I noticed that there was a small orange note on the door of my room. I just picked it up and looked at it. That was house rules. There were not only one or two rules, but more than 5 rules as I can recall. After I had read the rule, I thought some were reasonable rules, and others not so reasonable at all. Her first unreasonable rule was a no using of her washing machine. She had a pretty nice washing machine and a dryer at her house, but she did not want me to use her machines. I had to give all my washing to my host mother, and she did my laundry once a week while I was staying. Another unreasonable rule was 5
