I was able to write the words and letters down with minor errors the problem was writing well enough for you to understand what I wrote. In Guyana my parents had a class called dictation; it was basically writing down what the teacher wrote on the board. This was to improve your handwriting, and because of their teachings they made me go through they’re dictation and I would just write a page out of their book and if it didn’t look good enough they would make me do it all over again. And when I would do my homework in school and my handwriting wasn’t neat they would make me redo
As I delved into Natalie’s file, the prominent words were “English is her second language”. All of her teachers from first grade on major comment was “English is her second language”. I looked at her test scores and samples of her work and tried to see if I could establish a pattern that would help me help
Mexico City, Mexico 3) When did you begin to learn English? 1995-1996 I worked with a lady who had a daughter and I taught her Spanish and was learning English by watching her television shows. Such as, Sesame Street and Barney. 4) How long before you felt you could fluently speak English? 2 years 5) Since English was not taught in public schools; how did you learn the English language?
Her parents spoke only English to their kids even though amongst themselves it was Spanish only. Even though she didn’t know Spanish, her trip to Mexico gave her a new love for her heritage. She came back with a hunger to learn the language she had left at the border so many years ago. As she learns the language she writes this essay to appeal to those other people who, like her, have struggled with their heritage. She wants those who are Latino, but know Spanish as a second language, to step out and be proud of who they are.
When Kincaid views the map of England presented to the class by the teacher, she makes a sarcastic comment, “at the time I saw this map - seeing England for the first time - I did not say to myself “Ah, so that’s what it looks like.” Her teacher views the map with awe. Through this statement it is evident of Kincaid’s perspective of England. She shows much less enthusiasm because she feels a loss of her Antiguan culture with an over emphasis on the English way. Another example of sarcasm used by Kincaid is when she tells of the realization that nearly everything on her island comes from England. She states that the food, clothing, accessories and cars all seem to have been “Made in England.” Kincaid explains to draw a map of England would result in her erasure, not physical erasure, but her erasure all the same.
63), it states she watched “Three’s Company” in an attempt to learn English. When she was 13, she had to take public transportation to and from school for the first time instead of being driven to her destinations by a chauffeur. The school system was even different as she states “Unlike students in Korea schools, who were taught to bow to teachers at every turn…..” (pg 62) in Queens they barely made eye contact. She also had to learn to do her school work by herself as well has regular house hold chores such as washing clothes. These are some of the changes that she had to make to adjust to her new way of living as a middle class teenager, since she was no longer rich.
So, the next day she goes to school normally, taking in Mrs. Caroline’s way of education, and learning to accept certain things that aren’t that simple to accept. These three topics can be found in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. They may not be as significant as the themes of prejudice and injustice, but they stand out enough in the book to be worth talking
The students at that school had no home training; they cursed teachers out and fought them, and even though it was my first and second year of high school I’ve never seen that happen in my grammar school before. Another event that happened was one time a underclassman ditched school one morning and went to a corner store by our school and someone shot up the store, and ever since then before I graduated I was scared to walk to school. The school work was way easier than the first school I was in which lead me to get better grades that I was proud
For example, “Momma I aint’ goin’ to no class today” is a form of Black English. “Mom, I’m not going to class today” is correct Standard English. By the end of the essay Jordan’s class eventually develops a 40 point guideline for writing in Black English. Many people thought it was a waste of time to teach something like that in a college class of all things. When African Americans were brought to this country as slaves, they didn’t have any formal education on English or even how to write it.
By using these shortcuts we were able to slide the sounds together to make words and begin our reading process. I had my student to take the shortcut “ch” and “sh” and call out words that have those sounds in them. I was really surprised that she related the sounds to the names of our family members first and then was able to come up with some words from her
