Whitley Boudreaux Music 1010 Concert Report I attended a jazz concert that took place in November 16th at ULL’s Ducrest-Gilfrey auditorium. The program was divided into two sections. It started at 7:30 p.m. and ended around 9:30 p.m. It was a free concert to the public. The first selection was a jazz guitar ensemble.
Concerto Grosso – a small group of soloist is pitted against a larger group of players. Tutti – between two and four soloist play with anywhere from eight to twenty or more musicians. Fugue – a polyphonic composition based on one main theme. Subject – the main theme. Episodes – the transitional sections between presentations of the subject.
If you listen to it you might say A(8) but if you listen to the music Carefully, the music is slightly different which makes it same part to be A(16). And then the second chorus starts with slightly changing the note with trumpet. Second chrorus has same beat form which A(16) A(16) A(16). Then the third chorus starts. Dizzy Gillespie started adding the solos to the music.
These 3 instruments lay down a solid structure, so that other musicians can improvise around them. A second structure in jazz music, is the head of a song. The head of a song is the main theme, or the main melody of a song. Most of the time, the head of a song is at the beginning of a song. Throughout the song musicians may return to the head of the selection, to reestablish the main melody.
I could hear some syncopation coming from the guitar and the song had more of a slow tempo mood. And another thing by Tom Garling used a piano, drum kit, five saxophones, five trumpets, four trombones, string bass and a congo drum. It used an AABA musical form. The song had a medium slow tempo to it and it had a 4/4 meter throughout. In the song there was improvisation from the drums, trumpets and saxophones.
The performer sings a verse and then repeats the first line, sometimes with some variation. The third line completes the thought, often with a rhyme. A second form begins with the A-A-B pattern, but it also has an additional four lines, followed by a two-line refrain. The blues are about more than being sad. They were also delivering messages in musical code.
