Jasmine Roberts Abortion: Murder or Choice? Abortion is commonly defined as “the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy” (Mohammadi). Abortion is a very controversial topic when dealing with religion, the government, or just your everyday person. “Capital punishment is a legal process in which a person is put to death by the state because of a (very heinous) crime he or she has committed” (Michael). Is this not murder as well? In a 2007 study given by a popular Christian magazine, many extreme religious advocates voted that they were more in favor of the death penalty than they were of abortion. It is not fair of them to be against one thing, yet in support of another. It is said that capital punishment and abortion both result in the same argument: murder. According to the law, there is a reason for each. “A man can be put on death row because he chose to kill twenty people, while a woman may choose to have an abortion because she feels as though she is not yet financially ready to support a child” (Michael). One thing I have learned while researching for this topic is that some people can be very close-minded and just plain ignorant. They tend to not look at other people’s opinions. It is important in life that you have your own mind an opinion, but do not try to criticize someone else’s opinion(s) simply because they differ from your own. Its availability should not discriminate. People should not restrict other/s right based on personal values. Free will a precious thing that no one should control. Sometimes an abortion is the best or only solution for a woman. If abortions are illegalized, they could potentially kill more than they intend to save. I believe abortions will remain an issue for many years to come. We can, however, prevent the problem where it starts. Those against and for abortion can agree that maybe middle and high schools should implement sex education classes. The classes will teach teenagers about having safe sex and the consequences that arise when one does not take all precautions necessary. Abstinence is also a very preventable way of not getting pregnant as well. The classes will give teenagers the right knowledge that they need to make healthy decisions regarding them, their sex life, and their bodies. This could possibly reduce the amount of abortions needed in the future. Teenagers should take responsibility for their actions; your parents are not always going to be there to help you. The first step to preventing unwanted pregnancies is knowledge and full awareness. It is so important when dealing with life-changing topics such as
