Running Head: MULTICULTURAL PROFICIENCY Multicultural Proficiency Lydia Brown PSY 535 Professor Anyikwa University of Phoenix Online October 12, 2009 Multicultural Proficiency Years ago I thought I was the least prejudiced and biased person alive. When I entered the field of human services, I began to recognize that I had a lot to learn about work with others, but most important, I had much to learn about what I thought about others. As an individual, I wanted to grow and change my views of others and become the person I thought I was. This also has an impact on my growth as a professional who works with others. Emphasis is put on having awareness of how we perceive others with different backgrounds and how we interact with them. Guideline number two emphasizes recognizing multicultural sensitivity and knowledge as it relates to ethnically and racially different people. I have always assumed that I was not prejudice having grown up in mixed communities all my life. I have worked with and gone to school with people from a variety of cultures and religions. Making comments to a client when I was a new counselor years ago like, “but you are a man what do you mean you can’t find a job what about your family” seemed harmless at the time. It did not occur to me that I was being gender bias or implying to a client that he was less than a man if he could not do something that in my view-represented manhood. This criterion is not based on ethnicity, religion, or gender. Eligibility designed to address the needs of the client as it pertains to the program type. Training in the field puts emphasis on having empathy. Decisions are made by having a treatment team, which includes the client. This gets rid of the “us” versus “them” attitude that the APA Guideline number one discusses. (APA, 2002) Once treatment became person centered instead of counselor centered the “we” attitude resulted in a minimization of treatment resistance. Clients now have a say in what services they should receive and the part they play in their recovery.
