Connection Essay A Motif can represent an image, sound, action, or other figures that have a symbolic significance and contributions toward the development of a theme. In both short stories, “The Rocking-Horse Winner” and “Living Like Weasels”, both have symbolic meanings which are Paul’s and the Weasels eyes. In “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, Paul’s eyes shows that he wants true love from his mother, and wants to live life without lies. In “Living like Weasels”, Dillard’s eyes were gazing at the weasels wild eyes giving the true meaning of life. Both of the stories have given us examples of symbols of motifs. In Annie Dillard’s short story “Living like Weasels”, we begin to see a weasels lifestyle, and what they do in their lives. The author gives us a description of wildlife for a weasel, and how she has seen one. “His face was fierce, small and pointed as a lizard…He had two black eyes I didn’t see, anymore then you see a window.”(Pg.1) What Dillard is trying to tell us is that the eyes gives us a predator look of the weasel, giving us readers a motif on singleness, visions and truth. Now how the eyes gives us a connection to “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, is how Paul’s close set eyes that seeks the truth into secrecy of his family. He has an absent father and a mother who shows little love and affection towards him. In “Living like Weasels”, when the author made contact with the weasels eyes, she had said “The world dismantled and tumbled into that black hole of eyes.(Pg.2) This quote that we have, has given us a viewing on how the weasel is looking for truth by the way it’s eyes are. The connection this shows that Paul’s eyes gives us truth as his eyes turn black, having similarities towards death.
