Delinois, Bernadette Instructor/ Jodi Dougherty Eng. 090 – FC 56-A Paper-3 Rhetorical Analyze “Shooting Dad” How can a quality life be in the family when the members have different interests like politics, guns, or art? In my point of view, it could be very hard and extremely disturbing depending on many factors like their age, especially for the children. The essay “Shooting Dad” by Sarah Vowell narrates her childhood where her Father had a passion for guns, while her passion was for art. She also reveals that her father had an interest in the Republican Party, but she was more a Democrat. The political opposition (Republican versus Democrat) established itself onto the Vowell household with campaign posters, during the election when her father canceled out her vote with his own. Vowell’s Father was a gunsmith, collector and armorer. As time goes on she gives his views one more chance and ultimately is able to bond with him over it. In general, people don’t like talking about their infanthood, because it is not easy to discuss it with an unknown person. If for some reason he or she has to do it, they will choose to use simple and fun words as Vowell did. She used humor; imagery and contrast as techniques to skillfully create a strong, convincing essay. The author is able to draw the reader in by her vast use of imagery. It is easy for me as reader to put myself in her place. Readers know this kind of topic is very alarming and painful in all forms. The way she painted her house with all of the weapons and campaign posters; it is impossible for readers not to feel trapped in this
