Character Analysis For Moon by Chaim Potok Moon can barely deal with his family. Ashraf, a Pakistani boy, is coming to stay with Moon and his family. Moon is very emotional when he finds out the life changing information about Ashraf. He changes from easily upset to more of a helpful, positive character, and by the end of book, he has impacted many other characters. His anger is something that he deals with daily, but the growth he shows proves that he can become anything he wants. And with the change, he can reconstruct what others think about him. Counting down from ten to control his anger, Moon struggles every day with holding in his impulsive anger if he’s with his parents or in school. When Ashraf comes, Moon is already stressed out due to school and the way his parents treat him. For example, on page 15, he lets out his bottled frustration from his parents out. He slams his door shut so hard, a poster comes lose. Moon comes to understand that Ashraf isn’t holding him down at all if not showing him how fortunate and lucky he is. After he comes to understand this, he changes from angry and rebellious to peaceful and calm. It is easier to always be mad and not control your anger than suppress it and show only your kind and nice side. Ashraf played a critical part to help Moon confront the angered side of himself. Moon wasn’t able to have such a connection with his close friend, Pete. The main connection,in my opinion, takes place at Moon’s house. Ashraf explains to Moon that one reason he likes to drum is because it feels good to hit something. Moon sometimes feels this way too. Although it is unclear that Ashraf has any problems with anger or problems at home, the connection is a major barrier breaker with Moon because this scene takes Moon by surprise, but he has no visible signs of distrust or any negative emotions.
