Monomyth in Star Wars

George Lucas created the great space action book series, Star Wars, from Joseph Campbell’s idea of the monomyth. The monomyth is a series of steps a hero experiences before reaching his goal. In Star Wars our hero, Luke Skywalker, lives with his aunt and uncle on a small farm. Luke dreams of becoming a pilot but his uncle wants him to tend to the robots before anything else. One day when he has to take care of two stolen robots, C-3PO and R2-D2, he realizes they came from a Rebel ship and that one of them holds the plans that could end the war. He is spurred to go on a journey when the stormtroopers destroy his home. Luke must find a way to accept his quest and pass all tests before saving the princess and destroying the Death Star. In the first half of the monomyth, Luke is encouraged to go on a journey, and he must choose to begin or ignore the quest. The two robots escape to Luke Skywalker’s home after an Imperial space attack. Luke accidentally clicks a recording button on R2-D2, which plays the voice of a mysterious woman asking Obi-Wan for help. On the first night, one of the droids runs away and Luke has no choice but to go after him. He finds Obi-Wan who replays the whole recording. The princess explains why the plans were stored in R2-D2 and asks Obi-Wan to bring the droid safely to Alderaan. Luke is encouraged to accompany Obi-Wan who gives him his father’s lightsaber, but he refuses, remembering that his uncle will never let him go. He heads back home only to find it destroyed by the Imperial stormtroopers. At this moment, Luke realizes he has no choice but to go with Obi-Wan. They find a smuggler, Han, who lends them a space ship and is forced to accompany them when they are attacked once more. Soon thereafter, Luke exits his home planet and enters an alien world.
