Character Analysis from the Monkey’s Paw Short Story I. Introduction Short stories is a short narrative, if it contains some five hundred words, it is usually categorized as a short-short story. If its length reaches fifteen thousand words, it may be considered a novella, a short story. But for Edgar Allan Poe, often credited with the creating modern short stories, described is as “a short prose narrative, requiring from half-hour to one or two hours in its perusal” The Monkey’s Paw was created by W. W. Jacob in 1902; this story is quite famous in the time because it was first short story with horror genre. Beside the genre, Monkey’s Paw also has many intrinsic elements that build the story. In this story also have character, theme, plot, point of view and also moral value. So its quite interesting short story to analyze. The purpose this paper is to analyze the character and point of view from the story, how the author characterizing the main character and what point of view that uses by the author so it affected the main character in this story. And I will analyze the character using Character and Characterization, and also Point of View Theory to support the analysis. II. Theoretical Framework A. Character Analysis in Short Stories To analyze the story of Monkey’s Paw, I will use the theory of characterization from Jane Bachman Gordon “Fiction: The Elements of the Short Story” book. In this book, character defined into three kinds: Round character is a three-dimensional character complex enough to be able to surprise the reader without losing credibility. Because such character exhibit many characteristics, some which may be contradictory. Such characters are said to be fully or well developed.
