Mongol DBQ The Mongols were one of the strongest empires the world has ever seen. They were able to conquer such a large territory in such a small time frame due to many reasons. Mongolian culture encouraged death and destruction to other people. This is what gave the Mongols their fierceness on the battlefield. The Mongols amazing military strategy also played a part in their success. How the Mongols ruled conquered people also allowed them to grow their empire faster and more efficiently. As shown in Documents 1 and 2, the Mongols were very smart in how they conquered people. They used strategies and tactics that were unfamiliar to the people that they were conquering. Document 1, was written in the 13th century and is written from oral stories of the Mongols. It shows the amazing strategy of Chingis Khan and Jebe and how they were able to conquer the Cathayan people. Chingis Khan saw that the Cathayan people were very well armed and that he couldn’t attack them head on, so he therefore he devised a plan were he made it look as if his men were retreating and once the Cathayans went out to attack them he swarmed them with his army and was able to be victorious. Document 2 shows another remarkable way that the Mongols used their army and intellect to their advantage. Document 2, which was written by monks near Russia, shows us the Mongol movement into Ryazan. At first the Mongols were faced with much resistance but they still tried to compromise with the locals. When the locals refused to give them tribute and instead sent a request for help, the Mongols immediately went to their town and slaughtered everyone there. This was a smart strategy on the part of the Mongols, they knew is they installed fear that the next town or city they conquered would not want to fight if it meant they risked the annihilation of their culture and people.
