Modern Day Tragic Hero Compared To Not So Modern Day Tragic Hero: Macbeth and Jim Morrison Great potential, great character, leadership, the ability to bring about change, and most importantly a death that affected countless numbers of lives. These are the traits of a tragic hero. Both Macbeth and Jim Morrison share these qualities. Both were great leaders in there own respects, both had great potential and great character, and both there deaths were true tragedies. It is true that the circumstances of there lives and deaths are drastically different but I believe both are tragic heroes in there own respects. Both Macbeth and Morrison show the qualities of a tragic hero. There are a few differences; unlike Macbeth who was born of nobility (his father being the late thane of Glamis) Morrison was born into an army family, (his father being in the navy). Morrison’s fatal flaw was his drug abuse and the fact that he believed he needed them to reach his “next level of existence” which ultimately would be his death. While Macbeth’s fatal flaw was his ambition and pride. If his manhood was questioned he would go to any lengths to make sure he was not seen as a coward. Lady Macbeth used this to convince him to kill Duncan. His ambition allowed him the justification of killing him. Ironically one characteristic they both shared that would be another flaw leading to their deaths is there delusions of grander. Macbeth believed that he could not be killed by any man born of woman. Morrison believed that he was a shaman. Both men were great leaders in there own way. Macbeth was a military man. He led his men to countless victories and was rewarded with glory (i.e. being named thane of Glamis and Cawdor) and the land that goes with it.
