The sentimental value holds a lot higher than the price of the old building for Mrs. Fullerton. Her friends try to convince her that the new “shiny” whites houses aren't as bad as Mrs. Fullerton makes them come across. Still, she sticks with her instinct by remaining in her decrepit shack. Symbols for the story In the short story “The Shining Houses” there is a ongoing contrast between the newer subdivisions being developed in the neighbourhood that the remaining properties are on, such as Mrs. Fullerton’s. Her house is a symbol of the older generations that are considered very outdated, dull, and have a mediocre way of living.
So how can the two be tied together? Well first of all, their views are very strong and loud. Baldwin rants in his essay that the whites are too blame for the uneducated African Americans and the formation of the dialect: black language, which Baldwin intensely argues that it is not a dialect and the term dialect is offensive “white people in American never had any interest in educating black people, except as this could serve white purposes” (pg. 264). Cisneros explains in one of her passages the desire for a “man man,” which through the person’s eyes is someone who can cook and clean – shadowing a female’s role which is something completely opposite of modern society’s expectations.

Indeed, everyone in Maycomb County, whether they are black or white, is affected by racism, and sometimes all it takes to see it is a child. Calpurnia, the black maid in the Finch residence, has been greatly affected by racism. She must speak differently around white people than she does with black people because “It’s not necessary to tell all you know. It’s not ladylike…” (Lee, 126). White people have a greater education than black people, so Calpurnia must speak more distinctly while she works for the Finches.
‘Debut’ reveals the issues of race and how society reacts to those with darker skin. It does so in a very confronting way, which could only possible through the innocence of the mother-daughter relationship, ‘Judy’ and ‘Mrs Simmons’. Mrs Simmons constantly reminds Judy of the burden of the colour of their skin and how it means Judy must perform at her very best at all times in order to just fit in and be accepted by the other girls in her town. “…Those other girls can afford to be careless, maybe, but you can’t. You’re gonna be the darkest, poorest one there.” The pressure society has put Mrs Simmons feeling the need to make Judy’s night of the ball feel like a ‘battle’ demonstrates the real effects that racism has.
The Discrimination against Women Identities Throughout history, female were considered lesser beings and nothing more than the property of their husband. In the short story, Blank Spaces by Joanna Cockerline, the acknowledgment of female being inferior creatures in comparison to men is highlighted. Struggle against misfortunes, Elizabeth is oppressed by the social inequality due to the fact that she is a girl. In Blank Spaces, the social inequality implied by the narrative severely impacts Elizabeth’s career hierarchy, character traits, and life experiences. Like many feminist writer, Cockerline focuses her emphasis on how social norm discriminate women by inhibit their job opportunities.

“Popular culture can sometimes quicken this silent transformation, because the atmosphere it creates and racist messages are so prevalent that they are difficult to ignore. Therefore, African- Americans are especially vulnerable to the messages conveyed by popular culture that white beauty will inevitably dominate people’s life.” She idolizes Shirley Temple unlike Claudia who despises Shirley. “Younger than both Frieda and Pecola, I had not yet arrived at the turning point in the development of my psyche which allowed me to love her. What I felt at the time was unsullied hatred” (Morrison pg.19). Claudia is too young to understand what is about Shirley that makes her beautiful and Claudia not.
In 1927, The supreme court even ruled in favor to sterilize a young woman because she was deemed an 'imbecile' and was involved in promiscuous actions in the case Buck vs Bell (Lombardo, 1996). It is obvious to any educated person today that these traits are certainly not solely heritable. The genetic and evolutionary theory was being misused in these cases. Current genetics expresses the flaws in the way these eugenic programs thought. Most of the 'undesirable' traits were not heritable, they came from environmental conditioning.
