Chapter-2 Functionality of Mobile Phones By: David K. Singson Introduction The functionality of mobile phone depends on its features which are the set of capabilities, services and applications that they offer to their users. Low-end mobile phones are often referred to as feature phones, and offer basic telephony. Handsets with more advanced computing ability through the use of native software applications became to be known as Smartphone’s.[1] Mobile phones have a number of features in common, but manufacturers also try to differentiate their own products by implementing additional functions to make them more attractive to consumers. This has led to great innovation in mobile phone development over the past 20 years.[2] All mobile phones are designed to work on cellular networks and contain a standard set of services that allow phones of different types and in different countries to communicate with each other. However, they can also support other features added by various manufacturers over the years.[3] Let us see some of the important functions of mobile phone in this chapter and study its impacts on the life of the youths or the so called teenagers. I. Voice Calls Among the different features and functions of mobile phone, calling is still a central function of the mobile phone for teens, and for many teens voice is the primary mode of conversing with friends and parents[4]. The convenience of the mobile phone means that they are never out of touch. This is both a positive and a negative thing in the eyes of the teens.[5] Teens are, perhaps the most consummate mobile telephone users. Among the mobile phone users in romantic relationships, a higher number of voice calls are associated with positive relationship qualities. [6] The presence of mobile phone to people provides a higher sense of security in potentially harmful situations. This
