A funding formula is a formula that gives a school the same amount of funds for each pupil. This can affect a working class child’s education because if other schools have a higher fund because they are more popular due to better exam results then working class children are unlikely to be able to get a placement at that school so they will be silt-shifted to a less popular school which has lower exam results because of its lack of funding due to its lack of pupils. However, this idea can be criticised because if an unpopular school gets too bad they will be put into special measures by ofsted, this then gives them more funding to try and help improve the school, if this is achieved then their popularity will improve. Silt-shifting is when a school off-loads pupils with learning difficulties who are expensive to teach and so get poor results. This benefits middle class pupils as all the troublesome students are removed from their school it means the teachers have more time for them to improve their grades thus making the school more popular because of their rank in the league tables then letting them cream-skim thus improving the school further.
Different types of schools help as parents have more choice and freedom of where they want their child to go. Single sex schools also help as it is thought that females do well when there are no males to distract them. They also get better exam results. Academy
The only negative I see in the self-contained setting is the fact that the kids are sometimes cut off from the general education students. Socializing and interacting with other students is very important during a student’s educational experience. This is the time where kids learn to be tolerant of other people’s differences and learn to work with others. The inclusive classroom to me should only be prescribed on a case by case basis. I feel it is a good idea in theory but in some cases it is just not a reasonable solution to me.
I feel it is important to take into account the personalities of the children, as learning may be inhibited if one child is particularly domineering or intimidating. It is also necessary to look at the subject being taught and be flexible in the grouping of children. I personally feel that for subjects such as Literacy and Numeracy, where there is pressure for academic success the children should be split into ability groups. I feel by working in ability groups, the children are still able to support each other and there is still a hint of Vygotsky’s ZPD theory being practised, as there is still a range of abilities within an ability group and the more able of one particular ability group, can support the others in the group. It is important to remember that no one child is the same as another, even if they are classified as being of similar ability.
Unstructured interviews allow the interviewer to build rapport with the pupils, unlike questionnaires where there is no chance to build rapport because the researcher has limited contact with the pupils. This will help the interviewer to gain more valid results when interviewing children from different subcultures. This is because the pupils will be more likely to give truthful answers when they trust the interviewer. This is especially important when interviewing pupils from anti-school subcultures, as they usually come from working class backgrounds and may be less willing to speak to the interviewer. This was shown in William Labov’s study of the language of black American pupils.
Due to increased educational opportunities as girls now do better at school than boys, and laws outlawing unequal pay and sex discrimination has meant ¾ of women are now in paid employment. When you have both parents working, possibly more than one job the support for their children’s education will also suffer. The opportunity for minorities to graduate from high school is less than a white student. The ability for minorities to go to college following high school is less than for white students. Certain cultures value education and success on a whole other level than others and it’s not that each ethnicity is better or worse, it’s the simple fact they were raised on and brought up around different values and expectations in their own culture. Creating again another subconscious segregation issue mentally within certain ethnicities resulting in a mentality that race superiority is okay and acceptable, when in all actuality, may give a little truth to how demographics influence a major part in the education of an individual, which after contributing to this mentality creates a domino like effect on the people who may not have been as fortunate as them but worked just as hard if not harder to get to the same spot. Separate but Equal? A commonly held belief in the 21st century is that all people should be treated equally, since treating one group of people differently from another would be prejudiced and give certain groups a difficult time in the “pursuit for happiness.” I think we can all agree Jim Crow laws were harmful to our society and a bad form of separation, but what about separate treatment for girls and boys? I believe that treating boys and girls the same way in schools and homes is unfair and can have an adverse effect on each group’s ability to learn new information and develop mentally. Simply put, since girls and boys learn differently, they should be taught differently. However, this fact seems to be losing its merit more and more in society because of a push towards equality and fairness.
This may mean that the house prices surrounding area (catchment) of the successful schools will increase, as middle class parents move in to try to get their child into the school. This would mean that through middle class economic capital, middle class achievement will improve. Parentocracy also means that as the best schools become over-subscribed they are able to hand-pick the ‘best’ students. Due to a combination of teacher labelling and the A-C economy middle class students are selected over working class students.
