Miss Emily the Sociopath A sociopath is known as someone with a personality disorders who manifests themselves in extreme antisocial attitudes and behaviors, and have a lack of conscience. In the story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner the main character is Emily, she grows up in the south with her father who was very arrogant man and he believed no one was good enough for his daughter, which meant Emily did not get the chance to associate with others often. Miss Emily’s personality can be related to one of a sociopath because she has similar characteristics as one, for example she is secretive, has an impulsive nature, and has a promiscuous sexual behavior. Miss Emily did not have guests over or ever invite people into her house the only exception was for when she taught a China painting class. Typically when people would come to her house she would “not ask them to sit. She just stood in the door and listened quietly until the spokesman came to a stumbling halt” (Page 147). This shows how Miss Emily is very secretive and keeps to herself she did not invite the guests into her house or even try to have casual talk with them when they stopped by. When she goes to the druggist to buy poison she demands to purchase arsenic and the druggist tells her that “the law requires you to tell what you are going to use it for” (Page 150). However because Miss Emily was so secretive all she did was stare at the druggist and he ended up still getting the arsenic for her, never knowing what it was really for. Impulsive nature within sociopaths and Miss Emily consists of her creating hopelessness in her victim (Homer) and she believed that she was all-powerful and had no concern for her impact on others. Miss Emily created hopelessness in Homer by killing him with arsenic and not giving him the choice to leave her, which is what the townspeople thought he was going to
