Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink is telling about why we eat more. We do not usually pay attention to what we eat when we are multitasking. When we eat, it is recommended to do nothing else, so we can focus and think what we are about to put in to our mouth. People's eating behavior is easily influenced by surrounding. For example, when we eat with our friends and we engaged in conversations, it is easy for us to not focus on what we eat; especially because our stomach cannot count on how many pieces of chicken wings we ate but we can see and count the bones. However, when we are not focus on eating, then we will not be able to pay attention. People in America eat until they are full while many other outside America eat until they are not hungry anymore. You are supposed to stop eating if you no longer feel hungry, but many people will rely on external cues that will make them stop eating such as, when they drinks are finished or when the bowl empty. Those things are the one that makes us overeat. Bigger portion is not necessary good. It might be a good deal but not good for our eating behavior. A survey found that with a bigger portion people tend to eat more and not realize it. When we serve our food on a plate, we usually finish what we get; if we use a big plate, then we could fill up the plate and eat a lot more but if we use a small plate, then the space is limited and will not fill it up as much. Then, using a smaller utensil will also help us to overeat. This book tells us about a lot of external factors of why we eat more than we need and how to prevent it and not by changing our diet. The most important message from this book is to pay more attention on why we eat. Before eating anything, we should really think if we really want to eat. Try to stop eating when we are not feeling hungry anymore. It definitely changes some of my ideas. I have been
