Sir Robert Peel’s principals and Community Policing share the same concepts and goals in policing. A main similarity is that preventing crimes is a number one priority. Crime prevention is not just the police’s responsibility but the communities as well because they share ownership, responsibility, and accountability for preventing crimes. When police take time to work with a community they can end up forming a strong relationship when it comes to dealing with crimes. If police want to gain the respect of their community, they must respect all of the different cultures in the neighborhoods they are working in.

The police are there to help by phone, internet or in person. They are there to solve crimes, help the public, and maintain safety and security. The police also have to help individuals within, for example if a person is fearful for their safety, then the police would investigate the matter and reassure them, or if a person has gone missing then the police would do anything in their power to find the missing person. The police are a statutory service because it entitles them in their duties to maintain the safety of the public; they also help to form better communities. The police are required to protect and serve in any dangerous situations and as much as possible.

Law enforcement officers have an obligation to prove to the community they can be trusted and this principle ensures that. In the City and County of San Francisco the Office of Citizen Complaints accepts and conducts investigations regarding these citizen complaints. In addition to these investigations it is important for law enforcement officers to report inappropriate conduct they witness to their supervisor as well.

I feel being aware of how your beliefs and personal attitudes can obstruct your quality of work is a good first step, identifying and understanding your own views. By having an awareness of this you can notice when you may not come across as friendly with someone who has different views and by noticing you can adapt your behaviour. For example, I have a particularly strong anti-war ethic and some clients have been in the army and are very proud of that.
