3. Methodology The methodology that this study will employ is a quantitative research approach. 3.1. Research design According to Burns and Grove (2010), descriptive research “is designed to provide a picture of a situation as it naturally happens”. For the purpose of this study, descriptive research design will be used to get a picture of psychology students’ knowledge and awareness of Autism. Using this research design the researcher will administer a questionnaire to the conveniently available sample of first-year Psychology students in order to define the characteristics of the population of students, whether they are more aware and knowledgeable about Autism because of the Psychology course, gender, age or having an experience with an…show more content…
Sampling procedures. The sampling procedure for this study is non-probability sampling technique. The reason for using non-probability sampling is that it is a convenient way for the researcher to gather a sample with little or no cost and in a short period of time. 3.2.2. Sampling strategies. The sampling strategy that will be used is the convenience sampling strategy. This strategy has an advantage for this study as data will be collected in time so that the input of the data can be started in time. It is also of great advantage that this sampling strategy will be used because it will enable the researcher to get the desired participants that are easily available in a short period of time. Since this study concentrates on the North-West University students who are already at hand, it will allow the researcher to distribute the questionnaires to those individuals who are willing to take part in the study. 3.2.3. The items of the questionnaire are close-ended and open-ended types of questions. The open-ended type questions require that the participants indicate their demographic information also they require participants to indicate any comments they have or any questions they have pertaining Autism, as well questions that require participants to indicate what they think of Autism. The close-ended type questions require the participants to indicate to which extent they agree to the statement of Autism on a 3-point Likert scale (Yes, No and Undecided). The questionnaire that will be used is the Autism awareness campaign questionnaire which was adapted for the participants and this study, the process in which the questionnaire was adapted is that it was sent to various lecturers who are experts in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders and items that tapped into the domain of this study were added and those that did not really tap more in-depth into this study were deleted. 3.3.1.
