Jackie Hutton About the exhibition 1) Title: It was the Melbourne now exhibition 2) Theme: It is themed on over 100 artists and more than 175 individual and groups’ presentations in areas of design, architecture, dance, sound and other forms to reflect and capture the complex and creative landscape of Melbourne. It also includes exciting programs the menu: out of the kitchen by Shane Delia, necklace making activity and writers workshops. It features numerous art and projects, some well known names include Janet Burchill and Jennifer McCamley, Emile Zile and Caleb Shea. It is also themed of how visual artists and creative practitioners profoundly contribute to the society which we live. This series takes its title from a poem by Faiz Ahmed Faiz about the effect of time on memories. It was created after Sandrasegars return to Malaysia after 29 long years. Each piece is exquisitely detailed filigree paper cuts and comprises of a self portrait that represents different Malaysian cultural groups. 2) The left half of the artwork consists of thin flowing line to both represent the silhouetted girl’s hair and the feminie natural vines and flowers. It creates a natural appearance as the curved lines work to symbolise the free and alive plants. The line is created by the remains of the exquisite detailed cut-outs on the paper. The colour is greyscale and dull, with a minimalist look. The colours are presented through the use of watercolour to create a tie dye effect through its blurred splodges of different tones symbolising a dark cloudy sky and feelings of loss and loneliness, which contrasts against the beauty of the detail in the hair and her silhouette, ultimately creating a natural
