Melanoma Skin Cancer Treatments Cancer, the word by its self is terrifying to hear and talk about. It is even more terrifying when you hear it personally, whether it is a family member being diagnosed or a doctor stating your personal diagnose. More than a million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and although it is scary there is hope. Hope not only for a cure and treatment but also for higher survival rates. Melanoma is a common cancer but with years of research there are two extraordinary treatments available. Although they affect the mind and body differently Chemotherapy and Interferon are two of the most effective forms of Melanoma Cancer treatments. Chemotherapy may be given to a cancer patient to keep the cancer from spreading or to prevent the cancer cells from dividing at a fast rate. Chemotherapy may also be given to a patient to help relieve symptoms such as pain from the cancer. Chemotherapy is a great discovery and has helped save many lives but it can be very invasive and cause unpleasant side effects. Chemotherapy is designed to kill any cells that are growing at a fast rate even if they are not cancerous, this can lead to great exhaustion and feeling sick. Nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and sickness are common side effects of Chemotherapy that cannot be prevented because every human body handles different drugs differently. Unlike Chemotherapy, Interferon does not cause extreme illness or hair loss. Interferon is not a strong drug therefore it does not attack the body in such a great and painful way but it is just as effective in treating Cancer as Chemotherapy. The most known and reported side effect of Interferon is depression and suicide. Although they are major and terrifying side effects they are able to be managed and controlled with different therapies. Chemotherapy can be used to treat most Cancers but Interferon is most commonly used to treat and prevent reoccurrence of Melanoma Skin
