Mean Girls Attempt to Positively Address the Young Population The movie, Mean Girls, addresses many cultural ideologies in a negative way, due, in part, to the formula that the movie follows. Mean Girls fits into the film genre teen comedy, which is a genre that targets teens and teen’s special interests, such as coming of age, first love, rebellion, and conflicts with parents, body image and alienation. Often these normally serious subject matters are presented in a glossy, stereotyped or trivialized way. Teen comedy films play up these factors to the extreme to add humor to the film and use satire to make fun of a somewhat teenage reality. This is exactly what the movie, Mean Girls, does.
Girls feel the need to degrade others, in order for them to come out on top. This is not appropriate although it is becoming more common in today’s world. In Dr. Manny’s article about teen bullying, he states that a majority of bullying is done within the “more popular” group of peers. Shown in research, “bullying levels peaked among teens who fit in the 98th percentile of popularity”. This is believed by Dr. Manny to be because of the lack of power within the lower 2% of popularity.
Decorating our house by hanging lights, spider webs, witches, ghosts, jack-o-lanterns, and even flying bats helps us frighten the neighbors; sending chills up their spine. One of my favorite decorations is carving jack-o-lanterns. From horrid faces of monsters and ghosts, I can find myself also frightened by these when lit up at night time. The food we make on Halloween is the all-time best. We always make pumpkin pie with piles and piles of whip cream on top, caramel apples that stick to your fingers and teeth, popcorn balls that we like to hang out to children, spaghetti to resemble hair and eyeballs, and my favorite; blood juice.
Logically, when people want to make friends, and “up” their popularity status, they are nice to others. In high school, it seems that girls do this the opposite way, and are mean to one another in order to bond with friends and become more popular. This paper will discuss reasons why adolescent girls tend to put down others, rather than be nice and respectful as shown in the movie Mean Girls. Most of the aggressions between girls in high school are not a one-way system. The issue of aggression at hand is more of a two-way process of attack and retaliation.
Cady’s behavior may have been partially explained by both the clique she belonged to and the power she felt among her peers at school. Mean Girls is a tongue in cheek look at the life of teenagers within a high school environment. It revolves around a girl named Cady who finds herself caught up in a wild world of backstabbing, manipulation and bullying. What started out as a sneaky plan to get back at “The Plastics” for being the mean girls, ironically, transformed Cady into a mean girl herself. The idea was simple.
Likewise in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, low key lighting is shown when Willy Wonka is talking about the factory to the kids and their parents. So then, it makes you fill like the place was huge and could fit many people. Besides that, Burton also uses Camera angles to show the viewers if a certain thing or person is powerless or not. In Edward Scissorshands, there was a high angle when Peggy was climbing the stairs in Edward’s dark Mansion. That scene built tension in the audience’s eye making them feel scared and impatient.
Now with the birth of realty TV the younger generation is exposed to deviant behavior on a regular basis. A prime example of glorifying deviant behavior would be the show The Bad Girl’s Club. On this show a houseful of young women of different ages get together to so called better themselves. Throughout the entire season they fight, curse, and sleep with people they just met. This gives young viewers an outlet to be like well they ended up on TV doing all the things we are not supposed to do.
Later Jones started the research about violent media after pop psychologists said the violent stories are harmful to children. Jones also states two girls as examples to show the affect from the violent media, and these two girls have big improvement in their life. Jones tried to point out violent media may give negative violent idea to child, but it provide a method to learn more about themselves and build up confidence for themselves. In this essay, Jones talked about violent media can also help children grow up in a good way, because it can help them overcome their problem. Jones gave an example about his son, when his son was first grader and all the friends started to climb tree in the school.
The show makes the idea of being a teenage mother seem like blessing. These young teenage girls became famous solely because they were or are pregnant. Some of the young girls who watch that show are becoming desensitized to the idea of teen pregnancy. Some are even trying to get pregnant in order to be on the show and become famous. This shows a complete lack of respect for the children that are being brought into the world under that circumstance.
