CASE Maza & Co Chartered Accountants: The Enigma Within CASE AUTHORS Zakiah Muhammaddun Mohamed Khalijah Ahmad Siti Faridah Abdul Jabbar School of Accounting, Faculty of Economics & Management, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia ABSTRACT Summary of the case: This case relates to a partnership that was formed by two friends, Mohd Amir and Zainal Ali, who had similar trainings as chartered accountants. The partnership grew from a humble beginning of zero client to become a prominent accounting firm serving about 200 clients with an annual turnover of approximately RM900,000. This case poses the dilemma faced by the partners now that the partnership has reached a new stage in its business lifecycle. The issues presented in this case revolve around partnership agreement and expansion strategies of the partnership firm. They seemed to be arguing on the smallest matters – last month was about employees’ bonus, a fortnight ago about a client’s request – and today they could not agree whether to accept a business offer from a friendly audit firm. Mohd Amir sat in his office as memories of the negative episode he had with his ex-partner in 2000 came flooding back to haunt him. “What should I do now?” He pondered to himself. “I have to think about the future - my future as well as the firm’s.
