MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. On November 4th 2008, Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States. Obama was the first African American president in the history of our country. This is an immense accomplishment paved by many influential African American leaders in history who have fought for many years to merely live in equality with other races in America. One well known contributor was Martin Luther King Jr. He was a man who was lead by a dream, a dream that he turned into a reality through his will power and strong belief in the ability of the nation to see that living in peace and equality is the only way our nation can prosper and become a power to be reckoned…show more content…
“The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is important even beyond its far reaching provisions. It is historic because its enhancement was generated by a massive coalition of white and Negro forces.”[17] The bill was passed by President Johnson and it allowed black people to be integrated with white people in public areas and even allowed the government to hold federal funds from places that let racism exist. This was a great victory for Martin Luther King because he helped end the discrimination and oppression of his people which had been going on for many years before he had lived. That same year, King was awarded the Noble Peace Prize Award for being the youngest man to receive the award for peace at the age of 35.[18] After the signing of the Civil Rights Act, Martin Luther King started his mission in helping the poor and facing socioeconomic problems. In 1966 King joined a March called “March against Fear” which was organized by James Meredith to inspire African Americans to vote. African Americans were afraid to vote because earlier, many places deprived them of their privilege to vote.[19] Therefore, due to the fear of being persecuted, many did not participate in the voting process. Now that they see that more and more places are slowly integrating and accepting more black people, more people were willing to vote and exercise their rights.
