A black American woman boarded one of the buses in Montgomery Bus Line and sat down. When the bus was filled, Rosa Park was ordered to give up her seat for white passengers. Mrs Park remained seated and refused to give up her seat. Shortly she was arrest and sparked direct civil right action. This gave blacks a perfect opportunity to take a stand against racial discrimination.
The black community organized and distributed 35,000 leaflets asking Blacks to stay off the buses that day. During the boycott Blacks rode in carpools, while others traveled in black-operated cabs that charged the same fare as the bus, 10 cents. Most of the remainder of the 40,000 black commuters walked, some as far as 20 miles. In the end, the boycott lasted for 382 days. Dozens of public buses stood idle for months, severely damaging the bus transit company's finances.
The Montgomery Bus Boycott was the result of mistreatment of African Americans using the public bus system in Montgomery, Alabama. For the black community, segregated seating had been a long source of resentment. African Americans were forced to pay their fares at the front of the bus then board the bus in the back. Individuals were arrested for refusing to give their seats to white patrons. Vernon Johns and Claudette Colvin were two examples.
On the 1st of December 1955, Rosa Parks, an African-American woman, was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for not standing and letting a white bus rider take her seat. It was an "established rule" in the American south that black riders had to sit at the back of the bus. black riders were also expected to give up their seat to a white bus rider if it was needed. When asked to move to let a white bus rider be seated she refused. She did not argue and she did not move.
Martin Luther King’s main principle was non-violence; he refused to use aggression as a force to get what he wanted. He developed this technique after following the works of Ghandi, who had successfully used the same tactic in India. This tactic encouraged sympathy for the Black people from the rest of the world, as it promoted the inequalities that were around at the time, which shocked countries as America was supposed to be one of the more developed countries in the world, and its reputation as a free nation was severely damaged by the allegations that it was a racist country, and in the cold war Russians actually used this against them during the Americans campaign to liberate Russia from communism. King was very important during the Montgomery bus boycott as he organised it. It took a very charismatic and influential figure to organise this and keep it going for a whole year, as it was very inconvenient for black people at the time.
Rosa Parks On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks entered the bus from work to head home. She sat right behind the seats that were saved for the whites, and refused to give up the seat she was sitting in. Mrs. Parks was then arrested and took to jail. This act of civil disobidience was an affective act because later segregation was considered unconsitutional.
Rosa Parks, a former NAACP secretary, was arrested in 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man. This was the start of the Bus Boycotts. These were a string of non-violent protests throughout Montgomery, Alabama. African Americans made up approximately 70% of the city’s bus passengers and almost all of them stopped using the buses. A young pastor – Martin Luther King Jr, organized the campaign.
Martin Luther King Jr. states “Oppressed People cannot remain oppressed forever.” (Cahn, 2009 p. 387) As we have seen throughout history, this is a true statement. Oppression is not something that sits well with any type of person that is under the oppression. To resist the oppression, one must carefully chose those laws that they fill are unjust and oppresses them, and once they are chosen then one can make a stand against the oppression. Oppression is unjust law that limits the power of the people that are oppressed into feeling powerless. The United States fought of the oppression over the colonies in the late 1700’s by first peacefully protesting the unjust taxes waged against them.

In Martin Luther King’s acceptance speech for the noble peace prize, he articulates that nonviolence is a perfect answer to the crucial political and more question of our time- the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression. Individuals of the black race were patronized and attacked due to racial injustice. MLK created a notion of nonviolence in order to end this injustice. He emphasizes that demonstrating a nonviolent demeanor is a much powerful force, which allows social transformation. However in order for social transformation to exist we must all develop a mentality/lifestyle that rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation.
