Jolt Essay ‘If you leave him there you’re a killer too’. Marko Turner faces a tough decision in the novel ‘Jolt’ by Bernard Beckett. It is an important decision and is helpful in the novel because it reveals themes and messages. It is also relevant to me as a reader. As the plot develops we see events that lead up to this final decision when the main protagonist, Marko, decides to save ‘the doctor’ from death. Relationships, revenge and redemption are examples of themes and ideas that are seen leading up to and a result of Marko’s decision. Firstly, this decision was important because it shows how the relationship between Marko and Lisa (the two main characters) developed. He felt satisfied and that ‘we all get what we deserve’ as he said to the doctor before leaving the hospital for good. Only by the end of the novel did he realise that he 'is not like (the doctor)’ and that if he leaves him to die he is ‘a killer too’. This then leads to his decision to free the doctor. This shows that Marko learnt from his bad decisions and is unlikely to repeat them. It was not too late for him to redeem himself and the influence of others helped him to do this. This idea is also seen in the novel ‘The Outsiders’ by S E Hinton. The main character Ponyboy associates with a negatively influential group that gets him into fights. By the end of the story he decides to turn his life around and go back to school. The influence of others helped him to do this and we see how he was redeemed. Both of these novels help the reader to understand the idea of redemption. We learn that it is never too late to change your lifestyle or attitude and that you must realise when you have acted negatively. You can then learn from these mistakes and redeem
