“Should our government force poor women to limit the number of children they have?” Dr. Glenn Ramadharsingh is quoted in an article in The Trinidad Guardian Newspaper on Wednesday May 23rd 2012 as saying that “the poverty level is 21.8 per cent.” He claimed that these figures came from the Central Statistical Office Household and Budgetary Survey for 2011. At that time he was the Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development. This ministry is responsible for social programmes such as the distribution of food cards, public assistance grants to the needy, general assistance grants which include services like house repair, clothing grant, education grant, house rent, pharmaceuticals, school supplies and bus passes for the disabled.
