I believe that Relationships are the connections between people which can be expressed in many different ways or situations. In the poem ‘manhunt’ by Simon Armitage he explores the relationship between a wife and her husband, whom is an injured solider who has returned from war. In nettles, the relationship is between a farther and his son who has fallen into a "bed of nettles." Both poets show the consideration felt by the reader of the poem for the other person in the relationship. In the manhunt, the narrator’s consideration is for the mental suffering which her husband is suffering.
In the beginning of the poem the soldier starts to reminisce about his past. The cyclical nature of the poem is appropriate as it emphasises the pain and the nightmares that are continuously in his mind, giving him no peace or respite. “Poured it down shell-holes till the veins ran dry… a leap of purple spurted from his thigh.” This image when contrasted to the images of his previous life, serves to create a sense of loss for the young. The injury still to this day causes him pain when he thinks about the life he could have had. The soldier reflects on his “youthful” days which effectively exposes Owen’s perspective on the aftermath of war.
WAR PHOTOGRAPHER LITERATURE Write about the poem, war photographer, in which my opinion is very effective in highlighting important social issues. Explain what these issues are and examine and discuss the various ways in which the poet conveys them. The poet is addressing the issues of war and morals of people. In stanza one, the poet shows how gruesome war can be, “spools of suffering set out in ordered rows” The poet, Duffy, highlights the contrast of what happens at the war sight from where he is now. The word spools also suggest never ending, hence he suggest the never-ending suffering those at war are burdened with.
The techniques that Sassoon has used in the poems are: imagery, simile, metaphor and onomatopoeia. A good poem may lead to sadness, joyful or simply wandering, but it always leads us to think more deeply about life for the following reasons: Firstly, it creates emotion; secondly, it shows us the brutality of war; and finally, hardships faced by soldiers and also by showing about death. Through this it becomes evident that a good poem may lead to sadness, joyful or simply wandering. A good poem may lead to sadness, joyful or simply wandering because it creates emotion. Emotion refers to a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
We can tell that he is hurt psychologically as it says ‘unexploded mine buried deep in his mind’ and physically as it says ‘the rungs of his broken ribs’ these are both effects of his traumatic experience at war. The distribution of each stanza could also show the distance that she now has with the subject because of his lack of understanding of his painful experiences and emotions. As a reader, it sounds like she is writing the poem the way she would be saying it, this emphasises the shortness of each stanza and the small steps she has to take to his recovery, which is also shown in the tone of the poem as she sounds in pain, which makes the reader feel sorry for her. However, in ‘Hour’, the poem is separated into four stanzas, which all have four lines each apart from the last stanza which has two lines. Each stanza has emotive language of the writer’s feelings, we know this as it says things such as ‘we are millionaires, backhanding the night’ this gives the reader the impression that their relationship is stable and strong unlike the fragmented relationship in ‘The Manhunt’.
Essay English Wilfred Owen is a famous writer. Renowned for his anti-war poems about World War I. His poems were trying to send a message to people to realise the horrors of war. He uses contrast, metaphors, similes and half-rhyme to help deliver this message as well as “painting” a picture in the readers mind. These poetic techniques are seen in two of his poems “Disabled” and “Mental Cases”.
Anthem For Doomed Youth is a sonnet written by Wilfred Owen about the realities of war. Wilfred Owen was a soldier during WW1 and therefore understands fully the true experiences of war. He was against war and was appalled by the effects of war on people and their families. The purpose of the poem is to inform the public of the true realities of war and how young men where dying needlessly. This was because during war times the media would tell the public that the war going great and that the men where doing just fine, but this obviously just wasn’t true.
War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy is a chilling and disturbing poem which focuses on the destruction and bloodshed caused due to war. She describes the experience and feelings of a war photographer, whose job is to witness these harsh realities. In the poem, we see the photographer developing images that he had taken from the war, and how thoughts and memories come flooding back to him. The first two lines of the poem say ‘In his darkroom he is finally alone, With spools of suffering set out in ordered rows’. That shows that he had some time to himself and for his thoughts.
Wilfred Owen was an active soldier during WWI, who used his horrific experiences during the war to write his poems. His poems stemmed from his views on war, as he believed that although war was sometimes necessary, it was futile and evil. Two of his poems, ‘Exposure’ and ‘Disabled’ both reveal the price paid by soldiers during WWI. ‘Exposure’ examines the more psychological effects on the soldiers and is written from the view of the soldiers on the front line, ‘Disabled’ shows the aftermath and repercussion of fighting in WWI and the physical damage it caused. The first word in ‘Exposure’ is ‘our’ and is written in first person plural, showing the reader that Owen wanted to convey the plight of the universal soldier and how they all suffered the same fate, no matter their side.
Carol Ann Duffy mentioned concerning her own work “I like to use simple words but in a complicated way”. I feel that she has accomplished this, both in expressing pain and loss, amidst various situations and in an inventive manner. The poem ‘War Photographer’, describes the working life of a war photographer, and his raw emotions regarding his profession. The poem is set, with great significance in “his darkroom”. This setting, introduced in the first line of the first stanza, reflects the dark thoughts of war that he has witnessed, and the contemplative mood which runs strongly throughout.
