Man takes advantage of nature with consequences The theme of man taking advantage of nature, and this having consequences is very important in the texts, “The Shell” By Colin Thiele, “The Seahorse and The Reef” by Witi Ihimaera, “The Adoration of Jenna Fox” by Mary E. Pearson and the film “The Island” directed by Michael Bay. The theme was very crucial in these pieces because it shows that man does not appreciate and takes things from nature with no just reason, there for taking advantage of it and it’s resources. It also shows the recurring pattern that there will always be consequences for at least one of the parties involved. My First example of this is in “The Island”, directed by Michael Bay. In this film man goes against the natural order and manufactures living clones of real people living in society. This is to create the perfect donor in case the “clients” need a new organ, bone marrow or lose a significant amount of blood. The clones are not aware of this and are kept completely in the dark about their gruesome fate. The clients are also in the dark about the inhumaneness of the situation and are not told that the clones are living, feeling, breathing people with emotions. “Hey just because people eat the burger, doesn’t mean they want to know the cow”. The clones naively believe this and actually look forward to the day they are picked to go to the island. “I think they are going to kill you. I’m going to the Island. Jordan there is no island!” This shows man taking advantage of nature and treating it without respect. What man does not understand is that even though the clones were made not born, they still have feelings and feel pain. They still live lives every day like humans. They still
