The most extensively researched of which is Mohenjo-Daro. “Muyan-jo-Daro or Moenjo-Daro,’ Muyan or Moen the objective plural form of the verb ‘Maran’ to die, Muo meaning the singular form of ‘dead man’ and Daro is the Sindhi word for mound or heap.” The English translation of Sindhi word Mohenjo- Daro meaning ‘mound of the dead men’. However this is only its modern name the original name is unknown like much of its ancient history. Located in Sindh, Pakistan Mohenjo-Daro is said to date back to the 2600-1900 BCE periods. Existing in the same era as Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Minoan civilizations. After its sudden decline in 1900 BCE said to have partially been caused by mass flooding, Mohenjo-Daro was abandoned only to be rediscovered in 1922. Undocumented for over 3700 years, major excavations lead by Sir John Marshall unearthed a whole city that “bespeaks middle class prosperity with zealous municipal controls”. With a planned layout based on a grid, forming rectilinear buildings, complex brick mortar drainage and a high level of social organizing. The city has a centralized market place, Great Granary, Great bath and a Stupa (mound like forms containing Buddhist relics).
