Macy's Coffee Shop Observation

Macy’s Observation Just this past Friday I went to Macy’s coffee shop in Flagstaff to see if I could observe a group of people talking to one another. Macy’s is a small coffee shop that has seating that is located both inside and outside. After I ordered something to drink I took a seat inside the coffee shop that was located relatively in the middle, this way I had a better chance of someone sitting near me. Soon after, a guy and a girl had sat down at the table next to me which I had then soon observed them as being just friends by the way they spoke to each other. For the remainder of the time that I was there, the conversation between the two mostly consisted of them talking about their day at school and what they were going to do over the weekend. Throughout the conversation each of the speaker’s use of language began to reveal different key facts about their identity and relationship between each other. For example by listening to their conversation I was able to tell that they were both still students that attend NAU, by the fact that they were talking about their classes and eating at the school union. Another observation that was revealed through their conversation just by the way they expressed themselves to each other, was that they were two mutual friends that went out to get something to drink. I noticed that the conversation seemed to be reinforcing the relationship between the two. This is because by them meeting at the coffee shop they got the opportunity to converse about different things going on in their life, thus strengthening their relationship as friends. Throughout the rest of the observation I got to not only see ho their language determined their identities and relationship.
