M1; Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of an individual. D1; Evaluate how nature and nurture may affect the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development in two stages of the development of an individual. The debate between the nature and nurture in relation to the development of an individual has being going on for years. The question is what is influenced more, the genetic factors which is nature (inherited) or the environmental factors which is nurture (learned as the individual grows)? The arguments of an individual’s physical features are due to nature; e.g. eye and hair color can be inherited from their parents along with other physical features like head and nose shape, curly or straight hair and a range of diseases affecting the health of an individual. However, an individual’s appearance can change by having surgery or using various cosmetic products altering physical appearance, this would then be known as nurture as the individual grows older they are learning different ways in which could help them change how they look. Several modern psychologists consider the question naïve and representing an outdated state of knowledge. The famous philosopher John Locke states that the mind starts on a blank slate, he believes nurture is everything and nature is nothing. He says ‘genetics gives the impression that what we are nothing but the stage on which a play written by our genes is performed’.
